One part - which involves a message written on an unusual object, you'll know what I mean when you read it - was very touching indeed. It's also, for the most part, a well-written, extremely vivid recreation of the Civil War, with memorable dialogue, events and characters. Fanon or canon? I think we'll have to call MARCH a canon in its own right, since there's very little direct overlap between what Alcott wrote and Brooks' own writing. Alcott's novel LITTLE WOMEN and decided to write an account of what things must have been like for the March paterfamilias during the Civil War, before he gets invalided to the hospital and Marmee goes out to see him. Before I begin, what we have here is an unusual case: this book, MARCH, is a case of professionally-published, Pulitzer Prize-winning FANFICTION.
